Nelson-Mandela with childrenWith the sad yet I guess expected new about Nelson Mandela this week and it being all over the news I have, probably like many people, learned what an inspirational man he was. I knew he was a powerful and influential man but had never read or found out much about him until this week. He seemed like such a loving man who cared about everyone and the future of the human race.

I have found a few passionate and thoughtful quotes by Mandela, about children and family, that I would like to share:

The character of society

“The true character of a society is revealed in how it treats its children.”

How History will Judge Us

“History will judge us by the difference we make in the everyday lives of children.”

The power of family

“From experience I have found that a family photo is everything in prison and you must have it right from the beginning.”

The respect children deserve

“One way that we can build a better future for children is by empowering them through allowing them to speak up for themselves. Of course, we as adults have to guide them and to take ultimate responsibility but that is something quite different from patronizing them. The rights of children must, importantly, include the right to be themselves and to talk for themselves.”

Give children the space to dream

“We understand and promote the notion that while children need to be guided they also have an entrenched right to be whatever they want to be and that they can achieve this only if they are given the space to dream and live out their dreams.”

Home sweet home

“I like relaxing at the house, reading quietly, taking in the sweet smell that comes from the pots, sitting around he table with the family and taking out my wife and children. When you can no longer enjoy these simple pleasures, something valuable is taken away from your life and you feel it in your daily work.”

Youth: my Energizer bunnies

“It always gives me great pleasure to be surrounded by the beautiful children of our land. Whenever I am with the energetic young people … I feel like a recharged battery, confident that our country can look forward to great things.”

Put sunshine in their hearts

“Together as a nation, we have the obligation to put sunshine into the hearts of our little ones. They are our precious possessions. They deserve what happiness life can offer.”

Wow I hope that the end of Nelson Mandela’s life will help to bring to peoples attention, like it has mine, how we should treat our children and indeed others in the world around us with the respect and dignity they deserve. Rest in peace Nelson : )
